Snowshoeing Tour 1: Fähnerenspitz, Appenzell

Well, it is almost midweek before I finally got around to writing this post. But here I am. Sunday, Yves and I made the most of the beautiful weather and went for our first snowshoeing tour of the season (together). After spending way too much time digging out my gear from storage, we had a late start.

For my first tour of the season, Yves decided that yeah 360 meters up a 25 degree slope would be no problem for me! Lucky me, huh? Anyway it wasn’t so bad, just typically steep for canton Appenzell.

Our start at Restaurant Eggli. View of Altmann, Ebenalp and the Säntis.

The official hike is   ca. 5.3km: Eggli – Fähnerenspitz – Gross Sütteren – Guggeier – Fähneren Weidli – Eggli. Yves’ report on hikr.org is a lot more detailed.

The only reason I agreed to go snowshoeing in the steep hills of Appenzell was that Yves promised a beautiful view, at the top; and I wasn’t disappointed. On Fähnerenspitz summit, you could see the end of Lake Constance, as well as a clear view of the snowy Swiss Alps to our West and the Austrian Alps to our East, not to mention the very green Rhein Valley at our feet.

My favorite part was coming down through the woods though and getting to dive into the soft fresh snow with my shoes.

    1. And what do you know now? That’s what I want to know!? I mean I think if you came with Alex you would have a lot more fun than by yourself. Or even with your parents? Anything but alone.
